Game Night!

Invite tons of your friends or family to a “game night”!  Begin by setting up game stations.  Let your guests choose a game they would like to play and when everyone has made their game choice set a timer for 15 minutes and let the fun begin.  When the timer dings everyone rotates to a new game whether they have finished the game they have been playing or not.

038

This is a great way to mix up family members at your family reunion and help them to get to know each other a little better.

According to a Hasbro press release, a 1999 article in Psychology Today asserted that you can learn more about someone by playing a game than going on 10 dates. And you can learn more about yourself by playing a game than you can from several therapy sessions.

You can make signs to help your guests easily find the game they would like to play.

Family Reunion Road Rally Scavenger Hunt

A road rally scavenger hunt can be a fun activity at your next family reunion or party.  A road rally scavenger hunt is really nothing more than an  scavenger hunt using cars.

image

There is no limit to the number of teams you can have with a scavenger hunt just be sure you  have a seat belt for each person in your car and an adult driver for each car.  Give each team team a digital camera or ask teams to bring a camera on your invitation to the reunion.  Require that photographic evidence be taken of each task that is completed.

Create a list of tasks that are safe and time friendly.  Give each task or challenge a point value.  The photo that would the hardest to get should get the highest points.  You can award additional points for creativity or for extra effort.

Set a time limit for the group to be back. It should be reasonable-anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, enough time to get the amount of photos in the scavenger hunt.

When the group comes back, compare pictures. It is most fun to project the pictures up on a large screen or wall so that everyone can see the photos the other teams took. There will be lots of cheering and booing but being able to view all the photos just makes the activity that much more fun.

Award prizes to the winning team and consider giving the driver of the winning car a gas card.

Road Rally Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Below is a list of suggestions for your road rally scavenger hunt:

1.  Find a gumball machine and buy one gumball for everyone in your car.  Take a picture of everyone blowing a bubble- score 1 point for every bubble in the picture.

image

2. Find an out of state license plate take a picture.  Score 1 point, 2 points for an Alaska or Hawaii plate.  Or perhaps license plate with the letter "Q" on it.

3. Make a human pyramid in front of the fountain at the Mall. Ask someone to take a picture for you.

4. Take a picture of someone walking a dog.

little black camera 231

5.  Find someone to dance on Main Street and take their picture.

little black camera 253

6. Do a Chinese fire drill at a stop sign.

little black camera 249

7.  Take a picture of a moon. (This photo scored extra points for creativity because the team went into a book store and found the moon on a book.)

8. Find a phone booth. See how many of your team can fit into the phone booth. Have someone take your picture.  Score one point for each person in the booth.

9. Go to a Department Store and act like mannequins until someone notices you. Get a picture in the store.

image

10. Go to a gas station and put 1.00 worth of gas in your car- take a picture of the pump with $1.00 on it.  Deduct one point for every cent you are over or under.

11. Go to a motel or hotel and take a group photo by room number 222.

Girls Camp 2011 angel moroni 071

12. Go to the slide of the nearest playground and get of picture of each team member going down it.

13. Go to a convenience store like 7/11 and have everyone walk in backwards up and down the aisles. stop at register, buy a candy bar and walk out backwards. Take a picture of the 7/11 door.

little black camera 240

You can also ask teams to get pictures of a spire, school or perhaps a sign with your family name on it.   If you are getting together during a holiday season ask teams for pictures of holiday decorations- for instance, a turkey at Thanksgiving time or someone sitting on Santa’s lap during the Christmas season.

NOTE:  You can also plan a scavenger hunt using public transportation but will need to budget more time for the activity.

Tips for Successful Christmas Caroling

image

Gathering your family together for Christmas caroling or a family sing-a-long can make your family party fun and fairly fuss free.  Of course the most important element of your musical party is the music and you can download a free copy of caroling lyrics at www.familyreunionhelper.com.  Consider these helpful tips when planning your family caroling party.

Choose your caroling route.

My family went caroling on Christmas Eve.  Mom would choose 3 or 4 families that she knew would enjoy a caroling visit and she always made a few goodies to give them.  (Perhaps as payment for listening to us sing off key) We would complete our caroling at a local nursing home.  Many of the children were reluctant to sing at the nursing home but as the years have gone by caroling at the nursing home has become one of their most talked about memories of the season.  HINT: If you visit a hospital or a nursing home, ask for permission ahead of time to make sure your visit comes at a good time and that they can accommodate a large group.

Provide Carolers with a List of Carols

Caroling will be successful if everyone has the same list of carols.  One song sheet for every 2-3 carolers is plenty. Specify how many verses you will sing of each song.  To build your song list you can type and print your own caroling sheets or make copies of the family reunion helper caroling book by clicking here- caroling song book.  The book is designed so that you only have to print off the music that you will use for your caroling such as- Santa songs, snow songs or spiritual songs etc.

image

Choose songs that are short, easy to sing, and fun. You should plan on singing 1 or 2 songs per house and end with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”.

Consider Using a Variety of Instruments

Jingle bells, cymbals and drum sticks are an easy way to make your caroling fun.  Carolers that are too shy or just don’t want to sing can participate by keeping the beat with drum sticks or shaking the bells to the beat.

Dress for the Weather

If caroling outside dress for the weather.  When sending out invitations for your caroling party be sure and let your guests know that you’ll be caroling outdoors so they can bring their hats, gloves and scarves.  A fun party favor for your party could be hand and toe warmers.

You can dress things up by asking everyone to wear a fun Santa hat or reindeer antlers.

Plan Refreshments for Your Carolers

At the end of your caroling party meet back at your house or rec hall and provide your carolers with bowls of chili and mugs of hot chocolate and marshmallows or cider.  You can keep your refreshments warm in slow cookers while you’re caroling.

Minute to Win it Party

If you’re looking for a fun party idea consider hosting  a “Minute to Win it” party.   “Minute to Win it” is a low stress, fun way to have a party.
The television version of the game makes hosting a “Minute to Win it” party fairly simple. You can do most of the preparation in advance so on the day of the party there is very little last minute running around.

Cute hors3e [pictures PC condo 398

The first step to planning a “Minute to Win it” party is to select the games or challenges you want to include.  Go to the “Minute to Win it” website and search for games by Name, Most Viewed or Most Popular.  Use this link to go to the website.

http://www.nbc.com/minute-to-win-it/

After choosing the games download the instructions included on the website.  For instance, for our party we played “Hanky Panky”.  You find the video of those instructions here-

http://www.nbc.com/minute-to-win-it/how-to/episode-120/hanky-panky/

Using these videos makes explaining the rules of the game easy- you just play the video!

Cute hors3e [pictures PC condo 407

We also downloaded a video clock so that we didn’t need to use a clock or timer- we just started the video.

Having this video timer made the competition fun for everyone- spectators and competitors.

Some of our challenges were held inside for a few we had to mve outside.

My brother, Lee, who organized the “Minute to Win it” competition was very organized so we didn’t have to wait while he found the props he needed.  Lee also separated the family into teams, mixing everyone up, not keeping families together.  Of course the winning team did get a prize to share.

Fun Pizza Party Twist

Cute hors3e [pictures PC condo 397

To add some suspense to a traditional pizza party divide you family and friends into teams.  Give each team a premade pizza crust a jar of pizza sauce and a bag of cheese.

Cute hors3e [pictures PC condo 393

Wrap pizza toppings in gift wrap or newspaper and let each team pick 2 or 3 of the wrapped toppings.  These are the toppings that they must use on their pizza.

Cute hors3e [pictures PC condo 386

After all the teams have “decorated” their pizzas and baked them, set them out for everyone to try.  Cut pizza in small slices so there are lots of samples.

More Cousin Party Ideas

Cousin parties or camps provide a great chance for all of the cousins to spend time with each other and is a wonderful way for those long-distance cousins to get together with one another and nurture those relationships. The younger cousins begin to look up to the older ones and the older ones take on a protective nature.

The one thing that seems to be important to the success of a cousins party or camp is that NO parents are allowed.  Thanks to Lisa and Annette for sharing the following cousin party ideas.

image

Grandma and Grandpa Hale have a cousins Christmas party every year.  It is always on a Saturday afternoon in December.  They invite all grade school age children.  The kids who move out of grade school that year come back as the helper.  They are great helpers and take their job seriously.  No grown ups are allowed.  Grandma Hale been doing her cousins party for many years and she suggests that it works much better without any parents.

image

Some of their cousin party traditional activities include:
* a craft
*play the candy bar game http://familyreunionhelper.com/blog/2011/06/candy-bar-game-for-your-family-reunion/
*Decorate Grandma and Grandpa’s Christmas tree
*They go out for pizza
* They go to the theater, watch the dollar movie and see Santa or stay home and watch a movie if the party falls on a weekend that Santa is not visiting.
*White elephant gift exchange – They play the game where you can choose a new present or steal some one else’s http://familyreunionhelper.com/blog/2011/04/ten-ideas-for-your-family-reunion-part-2/
* Sleep over for one night
*They go to church – Two aunts come before church and have a beauty shop to do all the girls hair.
*They have a family night lesson – given by one of the older children who come prepared.
*They eat dinner and go home
Hint for parents of the cousins- Grandma and Grandpa are tired. Parents come on time!

image

The Parson family has a “Cousins Camp” that lasts an entire week.  The cousins come prepared to go swimming and fishing at the beach.  They eat watermelon and hotdogs and when they get back to Grandma’s house after the beach they make homemade ice cream while everyone showers. One of their traditional activities is to play hide and seek and Annie I Over.

The Parson family have a special “workshop”day where they the cousins rotate from station to station learning new things.  One year Grandma and Grandpa had a neighbor come teach the cousins how to play tennis, then the girls rotated to the fingernail painting station and boys rotated to the bird house building station.  The last station was decorating sugar cookies.  One year the cousins all made decorative stepping stones that have become a lasting treasure in Grandma’s flower garden.

image

When everyone is tucked into their sleeping bags at night Grandpa tells stories until the cousins reluctantly fall asleep.

Whether an afternoon, one night sleepover or a week long camp consider planning a cousin’s party with your family.  It’s a fun way to have a family reunion with the very best part of your family.

Cousins Party Ideas

About 25 years ago I invited all of my nieces and nephew to a cousin’s party at our house.  They came in the afternoon, slept over and went home after breakfast the next day.

image

The two activities we did that those now grown cousins still remember were the pudding painting and swinging in the rope swing.

In talking to other daring moms I found that the one thing that cousins parties seem to have in common is that there are NO Mom’s or Dad’s allowed.  It’s just the cool aunt and uncle hosting the party that get to hang out with the kids.

If you’re considering hosting a cousin’s party consider adopting some of the fun ideas my friend, Jana, did at her party this year.  This is part one of a 3 part article so be sure and check back for more cousin party ideas.  Take it away Jana…

image

Every year I have a cousin party at my house. All my nieces & nephews come over for a day of fun, and building relationships with my kids, and their other cousins. I look for a kid’s movie that is coming out in the summer, and base my party on that theme.

This year was a ‘cars’ party. We all meet at the movie theatre (since we live in 3 different cities) for an early matinee. We watched Cars 2, then we were off to my house. My sister in law helped drive some of the kids out to my house after the movie, then she made paracord bracelets with each of them while I got the t-shirts ready to tie dye.

By the time the bracelets were done, I was ready to start tie dying shirts with each of the kids (10 of them). We got the shirts done, took a quick picture before my 2 year old nephew left, and ate pizza for dinner. My one requirement for the cousin party is that the parents have to go out on a date that night (hey, I’m a free babysitter- they have to take advantage of that!)

Then we had a food fight (I know this doesn’t go with Cars, but it’s all Ryan wanted for his birthday, and since it rained all of May, we did it in July) I gave each child a tray with instant potatoes, and they had to create a potato sculpture, Then we went to the swimming pool filled with noodles, and the kids had to try and sit on balloons to pop them. After that, they filled their tray with the noodles, and then a whole bunch of old produce we got from the grocery store. We set up some boundaries so that food wasn’t all over the entire yard, and started the food fight. Lots of fun!!

image

After that we went out front to the ‘car wash’ to get cleaned off. I had made it out of pvc pipe and literally looked like a car wash. By then it was 9:00 and everyone went in, got on their jammies, and went to bed. The next morning my husband made his ‘famous’ pancakes and then everyone went home.

I do try to make sure there is down time for the kids to just play together- jump on the trampoline, swing, play tag, etc. Last year the theme was magic. We saw The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, played a magic hat game, and ate a magic cake (it was black & white, and then turned colored). For the finale everyone had to perform a magic trick. They had to practice it and have it mastered at home first. It was so much fun to see all these little kids do magic tricks!

Thanks, Jana, for sharing your great ideas.  In our next installment we’ll hear how the Hale family runs their cousin’s parties.

More Family Birthday Party Ideas

When my Dad turned 70 we wanted to have a special  celebration.  He didn’t want anything elaborate for this milestone birthday so we decided to have an intimate family party.  My Dad loves M&M’s so that became the theme for our family birthday party.

m & M M & M’s are a fun party theme- the colors are bright and the shape is simple so it’s easy to make party decorations.  Here’s some ideas:

Use all different M&M colors for party ware. Mix the colors for plates, napkins, cups, table covers, etc.  We put containers of mini  M & M’s on each person’s plate.

We made a huge poster imitating a bag of M & M’s.    It was a fun idea and easy to make because- M & M’s are CIRCLES!! Use colored paper plates, write an "M" on them and attach to the wall or glue two plates together;flat sides touching. When dry, punch a hole at the top edge of the plates. Use fishing line to hang them from the ceiling or use coordinating colors of curling ribbon.

Use any M&M decorations you can find. We found fun M & M helium balloons.  M&M makes tons of fun things  to decorate with.  A great idea that was fun for our family party was the little plush M & M guys that you can see sitting on the table in the picture.  We used them as prizes for the games and activities we had.  Other fun prize ideas are small packages of  M & M candy.

m & M2

A simple idea for dessert is a large M & M cake.  (There’s that simple circle thing again!) Bake a cake in a round pan and frost in a bright M & M color.  Using a “star” tip  put a large “m” on the cake.  We served ours with M & M ice cream.  Cupcakes decorated as M & M’s is another fun idea.

m & M3

Fun Activity Ideas:

Have a jar full of M&Ms and the guests must guess the correct number. Whoever is closest, win the jar!

You can find free printable M & M coloring pages for the younger ones in your family at Coloring Pages.

If you play games with teams have “red” vs “green” or “plain” vs “peanuts” etc.

M & M Scattergories: This is a great word-type game idea.  To play give guests a minute or two to name as many things in a certain category as possible (2 minutes to write down animals beginning with the letter M, things with wheels that begin with the letter M or flowers that begin with the letter M etc.  (You get the idea) You can divide your family into teams. The team with the most answers in a category wins a point. The team with the most over-all points wins the game.

M & M Dice Game: You will need a straw and paper plate for everyone that is participating, M&M’s, a large bowl, and a pair of dice. Everyone sits in a circle.

Fill the bowl with M&M’s. Pick a person to start and hand them the bowl. To the person on their left, hand the dice and the box top. On your mark, the person with the dice starts rolling. The person with the M&M’s starts sucking up M&M’s with the straw as quickly as they can and setting them on their plate. As soon as the dice roller hits doubles, the M&M’s get passed to them, and the dice are passed to the next person. Continue around the circle until all the M&M’s are gone or for an allotted time.

When we have played this game at family reunions we split into groups of about 8 players and have several games going on at a time.

Funny Food and Games for Your Family Party

My family didn’t go trick or treating when I was a kid, we attended school carnivals and had fun celebrations at home.  Uncle Steven’s family perfected trick or treating and got it down to a science.  Somehow, when Uncle Steven and I married we took the traditions of both families and through trial and error came up with our own family traditions.  So here’s a few of our favorite food and games for this spooky time of year.  The first is a recipe my daughter, Megan, found and it is so yummy she has been banned from making it again this year- these eyeballs are just so good we can’t stop eating them!

Spooky Peanut Butter Eyeballs

Ingredients:

clip_image0042 cups powdered sugar

½ cup creamy peanut butter

3 Tablespoons butter, softened

½ – 1 pound white chocolate candy coating

Small bag of M & M’s or Skittles

Tube of red decorator frosting

1. Blend peanut butter and butter until creamy. Add sugar. Continue beating until it comes together and is about as thick as thick cookie dough. When well blended shape into 1 inch balls and put in the fridge on waxed paper to chill until firm. (30 minutes)

2. Melt the white candy coating in the microwave. Microwave in 60 second intervals stirring at the end of every minute until candy is smooth and creamy. Dip peanut butter balls in the candy coating and place back on your waxed paper. Immediately press a candy on top to make an iris. Place back into the fridge until set.

3. Using the tube of red decorator frosting make red squiggly blood vessels.

HINT: Since taking these photos we have found that to clean your eyes up a bit, use a paring knife to cut the excess candy coating from the eyeball- it will give your eyeball a cleaner look.

clip_image006

Bouncing Eyeballs Take a ping pong ball and decorate with markers to look like blood shot eyes. Then get a plastic pumpkin or party cups. Now give each child an eyeball and place the plastic pumpkin or cup at the bottom of stairs or across the floor. Have each player toss or bounce the eyeball down the stairs or across the room. The goal is to see if their eyeball bounces into the pumpkin. You can give a prize to those that get it in the pumpkin. Also for young kids, you may want to place paper cups together and have each cup worth a prize.

Mummy Pizzas

My favorite hair stylist, Stephanie, shared this recipe while she was doing my hair on Saturday. Of course, my daughter and I had to come right home and try it! To make pizzas look like mummies just lay strips of cheese pulled from a cheese stick across the muffin for the mummy’s wrappings. This was the hardest part of this recipe for us. Arranging the cheese “just right” takes a little talent- you want the cheese to look like “wrapping” not a picket fence or a white window blind.

clip_image008

Ingredients:

Whole wheat bagels

Pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce

Black olives, sliced

Pepperoni

String cheese

Instructions:

Heat the oven to 350º F.

1. For each mummy, spread a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto each bagel half.

2. Set olive slices in place for eyes. Bake 10 minutes or until cheese melts.

3. Bake for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the bagel is toasty.

clip_image010

Mummy Wrap

Equipment Needed – One roll of toilet paper for every team. Split into teams of two and give each team a roll of toilet paper. Then one person tries to turn the other into a mummy. Everything has to be covered except the eyes. First team done wins.

Flaming Ghost Cake

Boo! This ghost will surprise and delight your family and friends when you turn off the lights and let his flaming ghost’s eyes flicker and dance. This fun and clever cake is quick and easy to make.  I was given this recipe the first year Uncle Steven and I were married.

clip_image012

Ingredients:

Bake any flavor cake mix in a 9 X 13 pan. Grease and flour pan well so that you can dump it out onto f flat cookie sheet or foil wrapped cardboard. Cut cake into your favorite ghostly shape.

Frost with Grammie’s famous “Fluffy Frosting” recipe.

Grammie’s Fluffy Frosting

Grammie used this frosting in place of 7 minute frosting because you don’t have to cook it. Adding the HOT water is the secret.

Combine in a mixing bowl:

1 cold egg white (reserve egg shell halves)

1 cup granulated sugar

¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

½ cup of BOILING water

½ teaspoon vanilla

Whip on high speed for 10- 15 minutes. Frost cooled cake with fluffy frosting.

Place the 2 egg shell halves you reserved round sides down on the cake for the eyes. Place one sugar cube in each shell half. Make a mouth out of licorice string, chocolate chips or candies.

Just before serving, pour ½ teaspoon of lemon extract over each sugar cube. Light the eyes.

Ghosts in the Graveyard
Choose one person to be the "ghost".

Have everyone but the ghost stand at the home base while the ghost runs off to hide somewhere outside.

Chant slowly as a group, "One o’clock… two o’clock… three o’clock…" and so on, up to twelve o’clock. Then shout, "Midnight! I hope I don’t see the ghost tonight!" Alternatively, "Starlight, star bright, I hope to see a ghost tonight!"

Leave the home base and search for the ghost in the yard. The ghost’s job is to jump out, surprise, and tag a player. When anyone encounters the ghost they should yell, "Ghost in the graveyard!" and try to run away. When the ghost catches someone, they become a ghost too. Anyone who is able to run back to home base is safe.

Have all the people who were caught go and hide with (or close to) the original ghost. The people on the home base start again with the chant, "One o’clock… two o’clock…"

Continue the game like this until everyone is caught.

The last person caught becomes the ghost for the next round.
